With the new season fast approaching now is the time to start thinking about your Spring wardrobe!
Why? Simple. So you DON’T overspend, impulse buy or be tempted by unnecessary “new” things!
Do this for you and our environment…
It is believed that on average 6,000 kilograms of fashion waste is generated in Australia daily.
To avoid a “full wardrobe – nothing to wear” scenario and also being added to this very sad statistic all it takes is some simple planning.
Often people say to Jordi and I “you must have sooo many clothes”! The answer is yes, we have full wardrobes BUT they are functional ones, not ones full of “stuff”!
Naturally, as you build a wardrobe over the years your closet will grow however it should never overtake. Wardrobes need to be detoxed, audited and replenished constantly to be functional and useful. Probably the hardest thing about auditing your wardrobe is knowing when to say good bye to items that are still in perfect condition but don’t service you anymore.
The Wardrobe Audit
Auditing each season is essential if you want to have a wardrobe that is functional and serves you well. Detoxing is time consuming and tedious at times, however the results are well worth the effort. To get the most from this exercise, allocate at least half a day of uninterrupted time – more if your wardrobe is extensive – and wear something easy to slip on and off as you will need to try on multiple items throughout the audit.
Step 1: Divide your clothes, shoes and accessories into these three key sections summer (kaftans, shorts, sundresses), winter (woollens, coats) and trans-seasonal (light weight knitwear, denim, mid-weight cottons, silk, polyester mixes).
Step 2: Work with the existing season only. If it is summer work with your summer and trans-seasonal piles and pack winter items away out of sight.
Step 3: Start with your clothes, then shoes, bags and accessories and assess EVERY item. Ask yourself the following questions:
Is the colour perfect for me?
Is the shape and style perfect for me?
Does it serve a purpose for the season ahead?
Then place all the YES answers in one pile and all the NO answers in another. The items you are not sure about or can’t possibly part with for whatever reason, place them in a third pile.
Your third pile can either be packed away and reassessed next season or given to a good home. Either way, the third pile MUST be out of sight and out of mind, you can always revisit this pile half way through a season if you feel the item may work. Often what is in the NO and third pile is what makes our wardrobe look full but deems it useless.
TIP: Be honest and ruthless! Don’t hoard items that will only fit you if you lose or gain weight. Only keep items in view that will work now. Remember you don’t have to toss your third pile you just need to remove it from your functioning wardrobe.
Toss Or Treasure?
So how do we decide what to toss and what to keep? Below are some guidelines…
Things to Toss
- Ill-fitting garments
- Worn or damaged items
- Incorrect colours
- Anything you haven’t worn in two years that doesn’t fit the “things to treasure” criteria
- Items you wore when you were either smaller and/or larger if you never wish to be that size again
Things To Treasure
- Sentimental items (if they don’t make the audit above but you still want
to keep them, pack them away and reassess next season)
- True vintage pieces – jewelry, hat, evening bag, scarf, gloves
- Items that will do the “fashion circuit” and be back in style within 10 years – lace, satin, silk, floral, animal print, stripe, spot, denim, linen, velvet or taffeta
- Evening shoes and bags – these items often work back beautifully with new season after five wear, and give it an element of individuality
- Any item that is timeless in its design – the LBD (little black/navy dress), trenchcoat, leather handbag, court shoes, pearls, linked chain necklace, metallic clutch.
